Melbourne Cup 2014: spot the Aussie in classy international field

THE Melbourne Cup field is full of aristocratic European stayers, a Japanese superhorse, and the usual sprinkling of Kiwis.

This is why they are calling this the “Spot the Aussie” Cup because there may only be two locally bred horses in the great race next Tuesday.

One will be easy to identify — Fawkner, a distinguished grey, last year’s Caulfield Cup winner, and one of the big-race favourites.

The other horse to fly the Australian flag is an ageing, plain bay mare with a modest pedigree and cheap price tag. Her name is Unchain My Heart.
