Unchain My Heart (Al Maher) enjoyed a beautiful ride from Dwayne Dunn in the $150,000 Bagot Handicap (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington and she did her part by staying on gamely in the straight to register her first stakes success.
Smothered away along the inside, the only time Unchain My Heart came off the rail was to go around the tiring Light Vision (Zerpour) early in the straight and she then ran on gamely to hold out Prussian Officer (King Of Prussia) and score by three-quarters of a length with Viva Delspec (Savoire Vivre) close up in third.
Trainer David Hayes was winning his second Bagot. “It is great to see an honest mare like this get the black type,” Hayes said. “It is the biggest win for her career so I’m really excited for the owners. “When you have got a horse that can stay you can surprisingly step up in class pretty quickly and she has done a fantastic job,” Hayes said.
“He always said she would be stayer and we just had to be patient and she’s a valuable broodmare now.” Dunn said later, adding that drawing the inside barrier was a huge plus. “There was a real charge to the post the first time and the tempo just kept on,” Dunn said.
“I was able to idle along inside and didn’t have to push the button until everything opened. She has done a lot of racing but is all heart.”
Unchain My Heart (5 m Al Maher – Fly By Night, by Prince Of Birds) has now won seven of her 25 starts, placing in a further six and earning $223,850.
Unchain My Heart was bred by Rheinwood Pastoral Co and Pancho Pastoral Pty Ltd in New South Wales. She becomes her sire Al Maher’s eleventh individual stakes winner. |
